Kendal's Lone Tree

Save our view of Kendal's Lone Tree

Kendal's Lone Tree is a landmark, our own Sycamore Gap Tree. The tree stands 15m tall, defying all the wind and storms that nature can throw at it.  But an unwanted 5G mast is about to destroy the view forever.

The Lone Tree has been photgraphed more than any other tree in Kendal, in the snow, in the mist, with a super moon, with a starlit sky and with the Northern Lights. It is an image that represents Kendal and the nature that is around us.

Kendal Lone Tree Today

Proposed Mast

The Lone Tree is located on the Burneside Road, between Kendal and Burneside, near Carus Green Golf Club and Pepperhag Wood, an area popular with both photographers and walkers alike.

It is the highest "rigg" (Cumbrian for "hill") in an area known as "The Todds", which will be destroyed as a place of beauty.

The proposed site sits less than 1 mile from The Lake District boundary.

See the council map.

Do we need the 5G mast?

Kendal as a whole has reasonable data coverage using the existing mobile network, but over the years, residents of the mast's coverage area have had to supplement their mobile network coverage with WiFi using fibre networks of 1000Mbits/s from the BT Openreach network and Grain Connect Broadband

Does the mast need to be there?

No, this is simply the cheapest option by the contractor, "Cornerstone", on behalf of Vodafone.  A smaller mast could be sited in a less prominent location, still serving the same area, but would require either a discrete feeder mast to bypass The Todds, or using the existing fibre network.

Put simply this is Cornerstone doing this in the cheapest possible way with little regard for appearance and preserving the view of our lovely Lone Tree. A smaller mast could even be mounted discretely on a building, generating revenue for local residents and businesses.

How do I register my objection?

The window for the registration of objections is now closed.

You can keep up to date by visiting our website or on the Westmorland and Furness Council Planning Page.
